7 Easy Ways to Clean + Green: Boost Your Spring LYF
Just in time for Earth Day: A few of my favorite spring cleaning hacks + tools!
You can concoct simple and inexpensive non-toxic cleaners from ingredients already lying around your house with this simple recipe:
ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER WITH LEMON
- 16 oz glass spray bottle
- 1/4 cup white vinegar
- 1 3/4 cups water
- 30 drops lemon essential oil
Mix all ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake to combine. Spray and wipe on counters, cabinets, sinks, toilets, and anywhere else.
I've been on the hunt for non-toxic sunscreen for a few years now. Thanks to EWG's database I discovered Juice Beauty Oil-Free Moisturizer, SPF 30 , which earned a rare "1".
Since I'm constantly on the go, this lightweight moisturizer is in my bag at all times to protect my skin from the sun!
Dr. Bronner's 18-in-1 Hemp Pure-Castile Soap is a multipurpose, inexpensive cleaner that makes your whole home smell amazing with quick recipes on the label itself for cleaning dishes, clothes, your face, hair and body ... the list seems endless!
Buying local reduces pollution, conserves fuel, supports local businesses and economies - not to mention you'll receive fresher products! Check out your local green / farmer markets at farmstand and make a morning of shopping while enjoying the warm weather.
Want to help conserve water? Substituting with a plant-protein source once a week saves 840 gallons of fresh water it takes to produce a single serving.
Craving fish? Check out Monterey Bay Aquarium's regional Seafood Watch (download at mbayaq.org) to prevent overfishing and pick the best seafood in season.
Want to eat fast? Try cooking slow and save on your energy bill: A toaster oven uses half the energy of a conventional electric oven and an electric slow cooker uses less wattage than a stove!
BYOB: Bring your own bottle: Americans buy ~3.3 million water bottles per hour but recycle 1 in 5. I like Contigo's Tranquil Water Bottle or a mason jar.
I adore my Kindle app (who doesn't?!) to keep my backpack light on the go.
